AlphaACT HAZMAT depends on a knowledge base of cases culled from the experience of subject matter experts. Cases are constructed from the many different combinations of event characteristics, the observable cues associated with those events, and the calculated consequences of the resulting releases which determine the size of the Isolation Zone and Protective Action Zone. Initially, AlphaACT HAZMAT will include over a million cases built upon the expertise of hazardous material subject matter experts.
The system employs an innovative approach to knowledge acquisition in which decision makers can add new cases, cues, and decisions into the knowledge base through a semi-automated process. As the system is used by first responders for training and after action reviews, competitive gaming, and field response, the centralized knowledge base will continue to grow.
